Ok Santander have decided to cut the interest rate on this account for the second time this year. This means that the once top of the tree best buy account is now paying 0.6%. A far cry from the top rate of 3% it payed when it was first launched. On top of this the ammount you can earn on the cash back levels has been capped so further reducing what the account pays you. Finally despite all these smacks in the face Santander has the final kick in the teeth and have left the accou t fee at £5 a month so you now need to have a higher balance to earn enough interest to even cover this fee. Interest rate cut

Many experts believe that the bank of England will cut interest rates again. Most banks and building societies have cut their rates effective from 1st Jan. However there may still be some good fixed rate accounts available. These usually have a fixed term of availability but the bank can withdraw them early. It may be worthwhile shopping around to find a good fixed rate account say for one year and transfering some money to it. This means that whatever the BoE changes the interest rates to the interest on your money remains the same. However, remember that only £50,000 per person per institution (hence a joint account is protected up to £100,000) is protected by the government should the bank go under. Remember that is per bank NOT per account. Also this protection only applies to savings and bank accounts. Any money in stocks and shares is NOT protected. interest rates and mortgages etc

Well it has been a while since I updated here mainly as there has been little change on things like interest rates etc. Whilst inflation has been coming down the past few months wages have not kept up due to pay freezes etc. Mortgages - now this is the biggest debt many of us will ever take on. As interest rates have been cut this has also had the same effect on those of us on tracker and variable rate mortgages. However, some of my friends have seen their repayments fall by hundreds due to this but they have not taken my simple advice - overpay the mortgage. This is particularly important if you are on an interest only mortgage. An overpayment is a payment in addition to your minimum monthly payment which reduces the capital you owe. A lower capital means less to charge interest on so more of your minimum monthly payment reduces the capital hence you can pay it off more quickly.
